In support of their upcoming record “You’re Welcome,” surf punk pop outfit Wavves are on a national tour, as their dates with Blink 182 and The Naked and Famous wrap up.

Opening the show is rock group Post Animal. Hailing from Chicago, the band recently gained some major press for guitarist Joe Keery (aka Steve Harrington from “Stranger Things”.) While Keery was absent at the show more than likely due to the fact that the second season of the show is currently in production. As musicians, each member certainly seem like accomplished performers and their cohesive nature on stage attests to it. Their sound delves into neo-psychedelia, taking references to many of the forefathers like Pink Floyd and Yes, while putting a thrashing, heavier spin on it.

While the crowd seemed a bit subdued during the opening set, they definitely woke up by the time the intro music ushered Nathan Williams, Stephen Pope, Alex Gates, and Brian Hill on the stage. Starting off with “Way Too Much,” the first snare hits set the audience off like a firecracker. Although their latest record has yet to come out, the band played a good amount of tracks from the album and diehard fans could be heard belting the lyrics. The main selections came from old hits on their major records “King of the Beach” and “Afraid of Heights,” which broke up the newer tracks. Throughout the set, the line between the fans and Williams was constantly crossed, with stage divers a bit apprehensive at first when people avoided catching crowd-surfers. By about halfway through their set, the stage became a diving board, causing Williams’ manager to have to intervene (especially when a fan tried to swipe Williams’ bottle of Jamison.) That’s not to say the singer himself wouldn’t join in the festivities, taking joints offered to him and being carried across the sea of audience members. Closing with “Green Eyes,” singer Nathan Williams did a literal backflip from the balcony into the crowd (amongst the bevy of stage divers) with his take on WWE wrestler Jeff Hardy’s “Swanton Bomb.”
