Tei Shi Brings “Crawl Space” to Rough Trade NYC

NYC based vocalist Valerie Teicher aka Tei Shi already has two sold-out shows at Brooklyn mainstay Rough Trade NYC, but for the release show of her debut record “Crawl Space” she did a special free afternoon show.

As a Berklee graduate, Tei Shi’s backing compositions are as wide and complex, and her voice lilts and drifts above her very capable instrumentalists. Yet, her commanding stage presence and impressive vocal ability reaffirms her place as the main attraction. Tei Shi’s more experimental approach to R&B sees the vocalist taking notes from modern performers like FKA Twigs and Beyonce. In the set, she mostly played tracks off the record, but decided to delve into material from one of her self released EPs “Verde” with the track “Bassically” which illicited some response from fans of her early work. With “Crawl Space,” Tei Shi expands beyond her early bedroom pop sounds by using old voice recordings of herself at a young age as interludes, into fully fledged, band compositions.
