Strokes’ singer Julian Casablancas’ new solo project Julian Casablancas + the Voidz played a free show at Brooklyn’s House of Vans with opening support from west coast favorites Cherry Glazerr.

Lead by Clementine Creevy, the young three piece consisting of Creevy on guitar/vocals, Hannah Uribe on drums, and bassist Sean Redman showed their age and some strong potential.

Although poor vocal mixing may be to blame for some awkward dynamics between Creevy’s transitions of soft cooing and intense, Kurt Cobain-esque rasp, she also shows some need to gain more of a grasp of the balancing act that is playing her very technical riffs while singing and projecting a stronger presence on stage. Although its a more common mistake for younger, less-established singers it may have also been at the fault of a sound system mixed for Casablancas’ resonating baritone.

The trio started their set on their latest release the single “Had Ten Dollaz” and playing its b-side “Nurse Ratched” towards the end. Throwing in new songs here and there they relied heavily on their better known songs early, with tracks like “Teenage Girl” and “White’s Not My Color This Evening.” However, the combination of tried and true tracks with these upcoming releases shows their movement from their initial releases to somewhat slower, potentially more singer-songwriter compositions.

While mostly confined behind the microphone and her Rickenbacker, Creevy broke free from the space limitations and put on a far more engaging set, dancing about the stage. With Uribe and Redman holding down the rhythm section, Creevy belted out their last song before welcoming the Voidz to the stage.

Starting off with the more electronica-based “Nintendo Blood” the Voidz eased vocalist Julian Casablancas onto the stage before his legion of adoring teen fans. The appeal of the Voidz has been particularly polarizing amongst fans of Casablancas’ main group as their avant-garde songwriting sensibilities make for even more idiosyncratic and unintelligible lyrics. However, they do generate a significant amount of stage presence and energy that is well-reciprocated by the crowd. Even on their somber 9-minute epic “Human Sadness” one could have sworn Harry Styles just walked on stage by the sound of ravenous teens.

While paying some lip service to the fans, Casablancas also gave fans of his main group some satisfaction by playing a Strokes track “Vision of Division” which you may remember from this iconic Vine of Albert Hammond Jr’s disgusted expression at their “interpretation” of the track.
