Part of Hudson River Rocks Summer Concert Series at Pier 84 in NYC, female fronted acts Speedy Ortiz and Weyes Blood played an electric set. Unfortunately due to inclement weather, headlining act Waxahatchee had to cancel their performance, with staff clearing the area shortly after Speedy Ortiz’s set. After a short moment of confusion, Waxahatchee singer Katie Crutchfield came on stage in a pastel raincoat saying that the show has been cancelled due to safety concerns. During their set, Massachusetts band Speedy Ortiz experienced the first bit of rain around the time the band got into the track “Ginger” off of their latest record, “Foil Deer”. prompting lead singer Sadie Dupuis and co. to move their equipment further away from the edge of the stage, with their setlists already soaked and illegible. However, the band took it in stride with Dupuis saying “some of my favorite memories are in the rain”, especially in her birth month of July. Earlier and much drier in the day, Brooklyn singer Weyes Blood played a comparatively subdued set which consisted of her heavily synth-based compositions. A true NYC native, the singer discussed the Hudson River behind her, where she would swim in her youth, Dupuis mentioned a similar sentiment by the time the weather had picked up.
